  73. Introduction
  74. ------------
  75.      INIUPDate is a utility designed for Network Administrators
  76. who manage Windows on a Local Area Network (LAN).  Specifically,
  77. INIUPDate provides the following benefits:
  78.  
  79.      *    Easily add new applications to the LAN 
  80.      *    Prevent users from making modifications to INI files
  81.      *    Provide better support to your end users
  82.  
  83.      INIUPDate is a DOS program that modifies an INI file by
  84. comparing the Keys and Values in the INI file to a Master INI
  85. file.

  101.      INIUPD /I-<INIFile> /M-<MasterFile> /K-<KeyType>
  102.             /R-<RptFile> /D-<Disp>
  103.  
  104.           The /I, /M, and /K switches are required, though they
  105.      may be in any order.  Also, the /K switch may only be an S
  106.      or a D.  The /R and /D switches are optional.
  107.  
  108.      /I-<INIFile>
  109.      ------------
  110.  
  111.           This tells INIUPDate the file you want to modify.  It
  112.      can be WIN.INI or any other application INI file.  There is
  113.      no default file name or extension; you must explicitly enter
  114.      the full path, filename, and extension of the INI file you
  115.      want to modify.  INIUPDate will strip the extension and use
  116.      the path and filename to create a temporary file
  117.      (<INIFile>.$$$) and a backup of the file (<INIFile>.!).  The
  118.      user running the INIUPD.EXE program must have Read, Write,
  119.      Create, and Erase rights to the directory where <INIFile> is
  120.      located.
  121.  
  122.           Example Command Lines:

  127.           Since you are specifying the <INIFile> on the command
  128.      line, you can use environment variables in the <INIFile>. 
  129.      For example:

  131.                /I-F:\USERS\%USER%\WIN.INI

  134.      /M-<MasterFile>
  135.      ---------------
  136.  
  137.           This tells INIUPDate the file with the changes you want
  138.      made to <INIFile>.  Again, the full path, filename and
  139.      extension are required.  The <MasterFile> is simply an INI
  140.      File with Values you want applied to <INIFile>.  If the
  141.      Section, Key and Value in the <MasterFile> are not in the
  142.      <INIFile>, they will be added.  If the Section and Key are
  143.      found in the <INIFile>, the Value will be updated to match
  144.      the Value in the <MasterFile>.  The <MasterFile> is not
  145.      limited in the number of sections.  You may have as many
  146.      sections as you want in the <MasterFile>.
  147.

  161.           Notes:    <MasterFile> does not have to have the MAS
  162.                     extension.  You can name the file anything
  163.                     you like.
  164.  
  165.                     Users should only have Read and File Scan
  166.                     rights to the directory where the
  167.                     <MasterFile> is located.  This prevents them

  170.      /K-<KeyType>
  171.      -----------
  172.  
  173.           This is probably the most important option because it
  174.      will cause incorrect updates if not used properly.  There
  175.      are two types of Keys in an INI file.
  176.  
  177.      Singular Keys are Keys that may appear only once in a
  178.      Section.  Almost all keys in all INI Files are Singular.
  179.  
  180.      Duplicate Keys are Keys that appear more than once in a
  181.      section.  The two most common (and only ones I know of
  182.      currently) are the "Device=" and "Local=" Keys in the
  183.      "[386Enh]" Section of SYSTEM.INI.
  184.  
  185.      INIUPDate must know what type of Key the <MasterFile> has. 
  186.      If you tell INIUPDate that the <MasterFile> contains
  187.      singular Keys, and you update the SYSTEM.INI, all "Device="
  188.      lines in the SYSTEM.INI will  have a Value equal to the last
  189.      "Device=" statement in the <MasterFile>.
  190.  
  191.      My suggestion to you is to not use this utility on the
  192.      SYSTEM.INI until you fully understand how it works.  If you
  193.      use this utility to update SYSTEM.INI, create two
  194.      <MasterFiles>, SYSTEM-S.MAS and SYSTEM-D.MAS.  Put all
  195.      Sections, Keys and Values that are singular into SYSTEM-
  196.      S.MAS.  Put all Sections, Keys and Values that are duplicate
  197.      (Device= and Local=) into SYSTEM-D.MAS.   See SYSTEM-S.MAS
  198.      and SYSTEM-D.MAS example files that are included.
  199.  
  200.      /R-<RptFile>
  201.      ------------
  202.  
  203.           INIUPDate creates an extensive report as it runs.  If
  204.      you do not tell INIUPDate to send the report to a file, it
  205.      will be sent to the screen.  You must specify the full path
  206.      and filename for the report file.
  207.  
  208.                Examples:

  214.      /D-<Disp>
  215.      ---------
  216.  
  217.           This option only works if you redirect output to a file
  218.      with the /R switch.  The only valid <Disp> value is ON  
  219.      (/R-ON), otherwise it is considered to be OFF.  When ON is
  220.      specified and the /R switch is used, INIUPDate will display
  221.      progress on the screen.  It shows the section it is
  222.      currently updating and which Key it is working on.  This is
  223.      helpful if you have a large <MasterFile> and you want to be
  224.      sure the program is still running.  
  225.  
  226.      /C-<CmdFile> (New to version 1.10)
  227.      ----------------------------------
  228.  
  229.           This option allows you to put your options in a file so
  230.      multiple INI files can be processed by loading the program
  231.      only once.  Environment variables may be used in the command
  232.      line file.  See the INIUPD.CLF file for an example.
  233.  
  234. Example Command Lines
  235. ---------------------
  236.  
  237. 1. INIUPD /I-J:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI /M-F:\WINCFG\WIN.MAS /K-S
  238.  
  239.      This example updates the user WIN.INI file using
  240.      F:\WINCFG\WIN.MAS, which has singular keys.  The report
  241.      output is sent to the screen.
  242.  
  243. 2. INIUPD /I-F:\USER\%USER%\PROGMAN.INI /M-F:\WINCFG\PROGMAN.MAS
  244.           /K-S /R-F:\USER\%USER%\PROGMAN.RPT /D-ON
  245.  
  246.      This example updates the user PROGMAN.INI with
  247.      F:\WINCFG\PROGMAN.MAS, which uses singular keys.  The report
  248.      output is sent to F:\USER\%USER%\PROGMAN.RPT and progress of
  249.      INIUPDate is displayed on the screen.
  250.  
  251. 3. INIUPD /I-J:\SYSTEM.INI /M-F:\WINCFG\SYSTEM-D.MAS 
  252.           /K-D /R-J:\SYSTEM.RPT
  253.  
  254.      This example updates SYSTEM.INI using the Master File
  255.      F:\WINCFG\SYSTEM-D.MAS, which has duplicate keys.  Report
  256.      output is sent to J:\SYSTEM.RPT, but INIUPDate progress is

  259. When to Run INIUPDate
  260. ---------------------
  261.  
  262.      INIUPDate needs to be run before Windows is launched so the
  263. changes it makes to INI files will be in effect when Windows
  264. loads.  There are several ways to do this and you can use
  265. whichever is best for you.
  266.  
  267. Run INIUPDate from a Netware Login script, for example:
  268.  
  269.      IF MEMBER OF "INIUPDATE" THEN BEGIN
  270.         #INIUPD.EXE /I-WIN.INI................
  271.         #INIUPD.EXE /I-PROGMAN.INI ...........
  272.      ENDIF
  273.  
  274. Run INIUPDate from a batch file before loading Windows, for
  275. example:
  276.  
  277.      ECHO OFF
  278.      CLS
  279.      J:
  280.      CD \WINDOWS
  281.      INIUPD.EXE /I-WIN.INI ................
  282.      INIUPD.EXE /I-SYSTEM.INI .............
  283.      WIN.COM
  284.  
  285. Note:     Instead of running INIUPD twice, you can create a
  286.           command line file and run INIUPD with the /C option.
  287.  
  288. Usage 1:  New Application Setup
  289. -------------------------------
  290.  
  291.           There are several ways to set up Windows applications
  292.      on a LAN.  Basically, you install the program in a
  293.      directory, add an icon for the users to access it, and add
  294.      or modify one or more INI files.  The following is a simple
  295.      example of how to install a program called EDITOR.
  296.  
  297.      Step 1 -  Install the Application
  298.  
  299.           I install all my Windows applications in the directory
  300.           F:\WINAPPS.  For this application, I installed it in
  301.           the directory F:\WINAPPS\EDITOR.  I then granted users
  302.           rights to the directory so they could execute
  303.           EDITOR.EXE.       INIUPDate - A Network INI File Update Utility, Page 9

  305.      Step 2 -  Add an Icon for users to run the application
  306.  
  307.           I have a generic Windows group file called LAN
  308.           Applications.  This file is F:\WINCFG\LANAPPS.GRP. 
  309.           Every time the user logs in to the network, this file
  310.           is copied to their personal Windows directory
  311.           (J:\WINDOWS).  This way, when I update
  312.           F:\WINCFG\LANAPPS.GRP, all users will get the update. 
  313.           In this case, I added the icon for EDITOR to the group. 
  314.           When doing this, you need to be sure the PROGMAN.INI
  315.           file for your users has the line
  316.           Group#=J:\WINDOWS\LANAPPS.GRP.
  317.  
  318.      Step 3, Modify all WIN.INI files 
  319.  
  320.           The EDITOR program adds the following line to the
  321.           WIN.INI file in the [Extensions] section
  322.      
  323.                edt=f:\winapps\editor\editor.exe ^.edt
  324.  
  325.           You definitely DO NOT want to edit every WIN.INI file
  326.           to add this line.  INIUPDate was designed to do this
  327.           for you.
  328.  
  329.           All you have to do is create a <MasterFile> with the
  330.           desired lines you want added to each user WIN.INI file. 
  331.           The <MasterFile> is an ASCII file; you can use any
  332.           editor to create it.  The format of the <MasterFile> is
  333.           the same as for a normal INI file.  The <MasterFile> in
  334.           this case looks like this:
  335.  
  336.                [Extensions]
  337.                edt=f:\winapps\editor\editor.exe ^.edt
  338.  
  339.           Once created, I save the file as F:\WINCFG\WIN.MAS. 
  340.           All modifications I want to make to WIN.INI, I put in
  341.           the file WIN.MAS.  Master files are not limited to a
  342.           particular application.

  346.           I choose to update user INI files each time the log in. 
  347.           I use a batch file called WINUPD.BAT which is run after
  348.           the system login script exits.  The line in the Netware
  349.           login script to do this is:
  350.

  353.           The WINUPD.BAT file looks like this
  354.  
  355.                ECHO OFF

  358.                CD \WINDOWS
  359.                INIUPD /I-WIN.INI /M-F:\WINCFG\WIN.MAS 
  360.                       /K-S /R-WIN.RPT /D-ON

  364.           This looks at the user J:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI file and
  365.           compares it to the F:\WINCFG\WIN.MAS file.  All lines
  366.           in F:\WINCFG\WIN.MAS not in J:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI are
  367.           added to J:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI in the appropriate Section. 
  368.           If the line is already in the J:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI file,
  369.           INIUPDate updates the line to match the line in
  370.           F:\WINCFG\WIN.MAS.
  371.  
  372.           In this example, the following line is added to every
  373.           user's [Extensions] Section of their WIN.INI file when
  374.           they log in:
  375.

  378. Usage 2:  Preventing Users From Changing INI File Values
  379. --------------------------------------------------------
  380.  
  381.      If you ever want to prevent a user from making a change to
  382. the INI file, just set up the value you desire in a <MasterFile>.
  383. When the user logs in and INIUPDate is run, the user INI file
  384. will be changed.  In some cases, this does not prevent a user
  385. from making the change, but it does only allow the change to be
  386. active for the current session when a change is made.  Most users
  387. will probably not want to keep making a change every day and they
  388. will probably cease making current session changes.
  389.  
  390. Example:
  391.  
  392.           Suppose you want to put restrictions in PROGMAN.INI so
  393.      that the File, Run option is not available.  To do this, you
  394.      would add a [Restrictions] Section to progman.ini.  The Key
  395.      would be NoRun and the Value would be 1.  It would look like
  396.      this:
  397.  
  398.                [Restrictions]
  399.                NoRun=1
  400.  
  401.           Again, modifying every progman.ini file would be quite
  402.      time consuming.  Instead, I created the <MasterFile>
  403.      F:\WINCFG\PROGMAN.MAS.  In it, I included the two lines
  404.      shown above.  When the user logs in to the server, the
  405.      following line is run:
  406.  
  407.      INIUPD /I-J:\WINDOWS\PROGMAN.INI /M-F:\WINCFG\PROGMAN.MAS    
  408.             /K-S /R-J:\WINDOWS\PROGMAN.RPT /D-ON
  409.  
  410.           Even if the user modifies PROGMAN.INI with an editor,
  411.      the next time they log in it will be put back to the way it
  412.      is in PROGMAN.MAS.  I log the user out when they exit
  413.      Windows, so they must log back in to re-load it.  In logging
  414.      back in, INIUPDate is run again.

  417. Usage 3:  Providing User Support
  418. --------------------------------
  419.  
  420.      INIUPDate allows you to make changes to user INI files that
  421. help the user out.  Sometimes the user does not know how to make
  422. the changes or there is no way for the user to make the changes.
  423.  
  424. Example:
  425.  
  426.           Suppose you want to change the default screen font. 
  427.      The default is small and hard to read.  I have found that
  428.      using Arial, Bold, 8pt is a lot better looking.  There is no
  429.      way for the user to change this, so it must be added to the
  430.      WIN.INI file manually.  The following lines change the
  431.      screen font:
  432.  
  433.           [Desktop]
  434.           IconTitleFaceName=Arial
  435.           IconTitleStyle=1
  436.           IconTitleSize=8
  437.  
  438.           Suppose you also want to change where users must click
  439.      on icons to make the area bigger.  You can do that by adding
  440.      the following lines:
  441.  
  442.           [Desktop]
  443.           DoubleClickWidth=4
  444.           DoubleClickHeight=4
  445.  
  446.           Finally, you want to let users print to a file rather
  447.      than a port.  You do this by using the following lines:
  448.  
  449.           [Ports]
  450.           FILE:=J:\WINDOWS\PRINT.FIL
  451.  
  452.      where J:\WINDOWS\PRINT.FIL is the name of the file you want
  453.      users to print to.

  458.      use the same master file I use to add new applications.  It
  459.      is F:\WINCFG\WIN.MAS and looks like the following:

  518.      INIUPDate is a Shareware software program.  Shareware is a
  519. great concept, but it only works if YOU, the user, register
  520. Shareware programs you are using.

  522.      Shareware (also known as user supported software and other
  523. names) is a concept not readily understood by everyone.  The
  524. authors of Shareware retain all rights to the software under
  525. existing copyright laws while still allowing free distribution. 
  526. This gives the user (YOU) the opportunity to obtain and try out
  527. software (without advance purchase) to see if it fulfills your
  528. personal or business needs.
